The High-Contrast Lens: 5 Micro-Joys Keeping Me Grounded

I’ll be the first to admit it—I’ve been a little "complainy" lately. We all have those weeks where the friction of life feels louder than the flow, and the "venting" starts to outweigh the "doing."

But today, I’m putting on my high-contrast glasses. I’m pausing the complaints to look at the tiny, high-definition moments that are actually going right. Because sometimes, the "big picture" is overwhelming, but the micro-joys? Those are actually pretty beautiful.

1. The Pre-World Silence

There is a specific kind of magic in being the first one awake. Before the emails start pinging or the house gets noisy, there are those few minutes of pure, unfiltered silence. It’s my favorite way to "buffer" into the day—just me, my breath, and the quiet before the world rushes in.

2. Digital Time Travel

I love when my phone throws a memory at me from a year or two ago. Usually, it’s a photo of one of my early ceramic pieces. Looking at them reminds me how far I’ve come in such a short time. It’s easy to feel stuck in the "middle" of a skill, but those digital receipts prove that I'm actually growing, one kiln fire at a time.

3. The "One Drop" Brush

Right now, I have a favorite glazing brush that is just... chef’s kiss. It feels like I’m applying glaze one tiny drop at a time, and it’s definitely not the fastest way to work. But it gets the job done perfectly. There is something so meditative about having the exact right tool for the task, even if it forces me to slow down.

4. Mid-Day Solar Recharging

When that midday sun hits the floor, everything stops. Whether I’m actually stepping outside for some fresh air or just joining the cats for a communal sunbathe in the window for a few minutes, those five minutes of warmth are a total reset. If the cats think it’s the most important part of the day, they’re probably onto something.

5. The Unfiltered Studio Soundtrack

Listening to my favorite jams is the heartbeat of my workspace. It’s also the #1 reason I don’t do "Lives"—I like to sing while I work, and trust me, the internet is not ready for that solo career yet! But having a private concert while I create? That’s pure, unadulterated joy.

A Quiet Invitation

I’m going to try to keep this lens on for the rest of the week. Looking at these small wins reminds me that even when things feel heavy, the ground beneath my feet is actually pretty solid.

If you’re reading this, I hope you find your own version of a "one-drop" brush today—that one thing that works exactly like it should. I hope you catch a patch of midday sun, find a memory that shows you how much you’ve grown, or get to sing your favorite song at the top of your lungs.

We might not always be in a season of "big wins," but these micro-joys are always there if we’re looking for them.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a sunbeam with my name on it (and the cats are already claiming the best spots).

See ya!
